The Spring 2023 Season - It's Show Time!
Our Spring 2023 Performance Program season is just about over with only a few more rehearsals before taking the stage. The students (and the staff) are buzzing with excitement as we prepare for The Hard Rock Cafe on Sunday June 11th and The Fillmore on Sunday June 18th! We have been rocking out to four themes this season: Radiohead, Metallica, Pop 'Til You Drop, and Garage Rock. Each show had its challenges and we couldn't be more proud of how hard the band members worked and how they have progressed this season. Our shows are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, so like and share our show poster and event info on social media with all your friends, family, and neighbors. Come on out in support of these great musicians. Let's Fill Up The FILLMORE!!!

Our line up for each day - Garage Rock 11AM, Radiohead 12:30PM, Pop 'Til You Drop 2:15PM, Metallica 4PM

What are you going to be doing after graduation?

I will be studying Music Production and the Recording Industry at the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University.

What will you take with you from your time at School of Rock?

I’d say that the biggest thing I’m taking away is what Jamie has taught me when it comes to overall musicianship, especially when in a band setting and also trying to analyze music more in depth than just listening to it. I notice things in songs that I used to never realize were there.

What are you going to be doing after graduation?

After graduation I’m gonna be studying at the European University of Madrid, I’m going to be studying criminology online which will allow me to keep traveling with my family and study something I enjoy at the same time. I will also keep practicing guitar and start learning piano again.

What will you take with you from your time at School of Rock?

You should be proud of your progress no matter how long it takes for you to reach your goal, having a good teacher will help you reach your goals faster and talk to new people everywhere you go because you’ll end up meeting some amazing friends.

What are you going to be doing after graduation?

After graduation I plan on attending Montgomery college for two years, where I will be majoring in media production. I then plan on transferring to a four year institution in Maryland! In addition, I will continue my job as a drum teacher while I'm in college.

What will you take with you from your time at School of Rock?

The ability to communicate and play music with others. But most importantly, the ability to have a fun time when playing music both by myself, and with other people!

Next year I will be studying agronomy at the University Wisconsin Madison

What will you take with you from your time at School of Rock?

Probably the most important thing I learned at School of Rock is how to work together with others to play music.

What are you going to be doing after graduation?

I will be attending art school at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. I plan on becoming an animator/freelance artist, and hopefully I can do music on the side.

What will you take with you from your time at School of Rock?

From my time with school of rock, I learned connection and collaboration. I also had the opportunity to make some of the best and closest friendships of my teenage life. I am also incredibly grateful for my guitar instructor Jeff, whose lessons have become not only a learning experience, but also a growing experience for me. I am going to miss him deeply when I leave School of Rock. At School of Rock, I was able to greatly improve my technical guitar and vocal skills, and make friendships that will last a lifetime.

Upcoming House Band Gig
SOR Silver Spring's House Band is playing at the 14th Annual Silver Spring Blues Fest on Saturday June 17 at 3PM. SORSS has been a part of Blues Fest for many years already and our House Band is excited to be carrying on the tradition this year. Our set will be on the Main Stage located on Ellsworth Drive in the heart of Downtown Silver Spring. If you've always wanted to see House Band in action or if you're curious about the program, this is a fantastic local event to come check out on a June Saturday. Blues Fest is always one of the highlights of our year so we hope to see you there!

All Star - Josey
We got some very exciting news last month. Josey was selected as an AllStars!!! The AllStars program is incredibly competitive and considered to be the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. Less than 1% of students worldwide are chosen each year, and each of the selected participants demonstrates unparalleled excellence in musicianship, performance, and leadership. She is now part of this elite group and should be extremely proud! This is a huge deal for Josey, our House Band, and our school! We're so proud to have Josey representing SOR Silver Spring at AllStars!

NOTES FROM THE MOTHERSHIP

with Music Director Brooks Owens

EQ- Once you've learned the notes of the song, you still have to make yourself sound good onstage! Understanding how an equalizer (or EQ) works can be a fast and easy way to radically improve your ability to be heard by your audience, your bandmates, and yourself! An equalizer can turn certain frequencies in your signal up or down to shape the tone of your instrument. Most amps will have a built in EQ (usually knobs that say bass, middle, treble or low, mid, high) that you can use to find your tone, but understanding the pickups and tone knobs on your guitar or bass is a great first step as well. If you have a hard time hearing yourself or others onstage, consider changing the EQ settings on the amp or using a boost instead of just turning things up. If the sound is muddy, turning things up can actually make the muddiness louder. Talk with your instructors this month about how to use EQ to improve your sound on stage.
